I just spoke with him the other day on the phone, he said he was trying to hold on until Christmas but didn't sound himself.

This is just disappointing to read.

I once asked Jim what was happening in a pm late last year, and he
non-nonchalantly replied "Kidney cancer. Broke a femur, had kidney removed".
Holy shit, simple reply, horrible news.
Never saw much posted about it publicly(his illness), I have nothing but admiration for this man.
Rest in peace bud.
