There are many suitable underground storage/disposal locations if we would have actually pursued it. Andra in France is so far ahead of the US, it's embarrassing. They have 3 working sites and the arrangement is that the .gov paid for construction/operation and the companies incur the disposal costs. Their big issue is land available, so they are even shipping the crap to Russia. Macron wants 6 new reactors before 2050.

Over $15 Billion was spent on Yucca Mountain. It’s the perfect place to dispose of high level waste. Obama cancelled it at the request of Harry Reid, one of Nevada’s Senators. The GAO did an investigation and published a report saying there were no technical or safety problems, which is not what Obama and Reid said.

There is one deep geological disposal facility for DOE transuranic waste in NM in a salt mine. It’s not open for civilian waste.

France and many other countries are way ahead of us in this regard because they don’t pander to small vocal groups to buy votes.

DOE stopped all work in 2011 under orders from Obama. They essentially deserted the site and quit doing maintenance and upkeep. Trump proposed restarting the licensing process, which he then backtracked on. It would have cost billions just to get it back to where it was previously. It was Obama who shut it down and left, knowing full well what would happen.

Vogtle scares the shit out of me... It went unfinished and open to the elements for years even before Westinghouse went tits up mid project. Disregard whatever damage the weather did to raw rebar waiting to be poured over, unfinished structures not dried in for years, etcetera... would you want to live near a pair of reactors built by subcontractors who likely went unpaid while the bankruptcy and subsequent restructuring of management took place? I live close enough for those things to cause me genuine concern.

That was the DOE, not the NRC. Very different agencies. I trust the NRC. Not so much the DOE.

I don't know your area of expertise so I can't debate this... it just seems like so much good money has been thrown at an ill fated project the completed deal almost has to be flawed in some critical area. I guess time will tell.

I was in the Nuclear Navy. I worked at several nuclear power plants. I’ve been involved in radioactive decommissioning and remediation projects worldwide including Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima. I’ve done consulting work for the NRC, DOE and other government agencies.
