Holy shit, I hope that's a photohack.
The thing about posts (columns), that under a gravity load, if they fail, they fail explosively. Beams fail slowly. I got a call from a contractor about 15 years ago, a gruff older guy, upset that the county inspector told him to "get an engineer". I agreed to meet him at the site. He had built a one-room, main story addition on the back of a house, above a tall basement. I parked on the street and walked down the slope into the back yard. The contractor was there along with the county inspector. The addition was way up in the air- looked like 17' but must have been shorter. As I got closer I noticed the two columns that were supporting it and almost shit my pants. The columns were two bricks wide, alternating directions with each course. I asked the contractor if there was any rebar in the posts. He had no idea what I was talking about, so his non-answer was "no". Unreinforced masonry column, 8" nominal width, Code allows a maximum height of 4x width, or 32". This was at least six times that. Then I heard a window in the addition open. A woman stuck her head out to access what was going on in her backyard. I yelled up to her to get herself out of the room, into the main part of the house, make sure there was no one else in there, then close the door to it- this was a dangerous situation and I was condemning the addition. The contractor, my would-be client, was obviously pissed. The county inspector was relieved. I told the contractor to replace the bricks with 6x6 timbers immediately. |

You have a very interesting point of view. Yadkin has such a pathetic life that he has to make up stories about mine. I can't imagine what kind of sick mind would take the time to do this and how sad his life must be and what benefits he gets from it. I respond with facts that he posts and hope that he sees the dangers he presents. And I'm the troll. |

Run away and hide? He's been hiding (hidding in his words) all along. Won't even respond to my cookout invite or our road trip/reunion plans. I keep inviting him, no response. He won't even give me useful tips on ant farming. Or windmills. Tight lipped bastard. I hope he doesn't inhale too many dust bunnies while he's 'hidding' under the bed.

Now that I got the boiler running again I discovered why the towel bar was heating intermittently, and stopped completely when it was no longer cold outside. The pump that serves that zone isn't putting out enough flow to turn on the DHW circuit in the combi boiler. That circuit is set at a lower temperature than boiler water, and I'm using it for the bar, floor and radiators. It's triggered by a flow sensor; turns on at 0.5 gpm and off at 0.4gpm. It's similar to a on-demand water heater.
The pumps in all these zones are Taco 006. My flow loss calculations show that they should work. I get adequate flow in the radiator zones, and those are on the second floor, further away, so much longer runs. My solution is to replace the pump in the towel bar zone with a Taco 008. It's the same size and flange configuration, but 1/25 HP instead of 1/40. In the meantime I am running one radiator circuit to keep the towel bar warm. I reduced the water temperature from 130F, in the winter, down to 115F, and then again to 100F. Nights have been in the 50's and this keeps the house warm, turing the main thermostat down and using the air handler to distribute the heat from the single radiator. |

Updated schematic for the heating system since I added two auxiliary thermostats to the main heating system.
Those Honeywell "round" thermostats are tricky. They don't work when you connect the C to the Taco SR, so to make them work you use a 1000 ohm resistor between W and C at the panel. Not an issue with the boiler control. The Taco powers Zones 1-4 by 24VAC. The boiler itself does Zones 5-6, along with the air handler and the humidifier. |
