So which veggies or fruit are easy to grow but expensive at the store so it's more worthwhile? Raspberries maybe?

I still want a farm with a big garden and chicken with the fancy feet, though. Maybe a highland cow. And some goats. Maybe some ducks. Definitely some barn cats.
Yep. When things in your garden are ripe, so is everybody else's. Supply is bigger than demand. Like zooks, can't give them away in the summer. When I had hogs in an earlier life, they won't eat them either. Despite the folklore, hogs don't eat everything, but if they like something they do go "whole hog."

It's not really worth it money-wise, but gardening is enjoyable for most peepers. I can walk out on my porch and pick fresh stuff as needed. But I'm lacking in sunlight for some crops, hoping the trees I had logged will give me another hour or two.

Two or three lives ago when I was married and lived on very good soil with full sunlight, we grew great gardens.

None of them are as easy or cheap when backyard growing, but you can control a lot what goes into your mouth.

And every bit of them will be better tasting and better quality than the supermarket stuff.

Even if you don't want to grow your own, cultivate the local growers who are available to you now.

I can get perfectly ripe, big, soft, juicy red raspberries (my favs anyway) at my small supermarket year-round. They come from Meh-hee-co. I don't know how they do it.

I get one or two packages every week and have a dish with heavy cream for dessert.

I have wild black ones around the edge of the yard but they are small, less sweet, harder, and seedy. I pushed the brush back with the tractor last year so there weren't any. Might be a few this year, but I much prefer the store ones.

I have no idea what they cost. If I want to eat something from a supermarket I just buy it.
