just watching Fox news. they were touring thru a flooded house, now drained. high water mark was above the kitchen counters (normally 36"), and the crew was hauling out everything that got wet. a huge pile curbside of appliances, furniture, bedding, personal belongings.

take that picture and multiply it by about 50,000.....

and of course every one of these home will need new flooring, new wiring, new drywall, new appliances, new furniture, new bedding, new personal stuffs..... and new cars/trucks. and thousands of businesses likewise.

amazing.

Don't forget, new exterior walls/siding, insulation, wiring, and possibly plumbing. As well, mold remediation/prevention.

And don't forget, also, that even if you have cash in hand for all the repairs, good luck finding an available contractor to do the work. And whatever state agency polices people posing as contractors better staff up for enforcing the rules.

On a much smaller scale, of course, my county is still going through this after the fires of the last two years. We have over 500 homes now permitted and under construction, and pre-fire we had two building inspectors on the county payroll. We did a lot of creative things. We borrowed inspectors from neighboring counties where they weren't too busy, we recalled willing retired inspectors and reinstated their certifications, etc.

I'll bet you can't find a pair of rubber boots for sale within 200 miles of the Texas coast right now.

my background is mechanical engineering. had a PE license for about 20+ years. for the last many years of my "career" i did due diligence inspections of commercial real estate - how old things were, what kind of shape they were in, how much to fix or replace now or in the future. saw all kinds of properties over time. i could make a decent argument that i'd make a decent building inspector if pressed to do so. heck, i did construction inspection in Antarctica for a year.

but am i looking to relocate to TX and do that. nope. not at all.

i concur, rebuilding will take years. and contractors will go work on the most profitable projects first. the ones that will pay.

And every day the water sits there, the sheetrock wicks it upward, so the problem doesn't stop at the water line.

My Brother-in-law lives in Dallas and he is a retired firefighter and had a general contractor's license in California. He is currently a project manager for Habitat for Humanity and he went to the northeast after Sandy hit. If his health permits, I bet he'll be down in Houston soon.

50,000+ homes stripped to framing. and then rebuilt.

if you want to get into the building trades, now is your golden opportunity. just show up sober on time, you'll work your ass off and make good money.

KATY, Texas - Dozens of emergency vehicles were at the scene of a shooting Wednesday in Katy.

The incident was reported about 1:20 p.m. near the intersection of Peek Road and Westheimer Parkway. KPRC 2 reporter Sophia Beausoleil said that she was headed to the scene of a story when she saw a large number of law enforcement and emergency vehicles responding to the intersection.

Witnesses reported hearing a couple of popping sounds.

Beausoleil said she could see authorities performing CPR on someone and another person being put in handcuffs.

He picked the right week to be out of town, that is for sure.

I walked in at 1:30, and people were almost throwing deals at me.

Nine Ford dealers in the Houston area lost 100% of their inventory.

My wife said "I'm sure the car dealers there will be giving people a break on the prices because of the floods."

I chuckled.
