As I hoped you remembered, today is the 70th Anniversary of the Jap attack to Pearl Harbor.

This never gets old, every year I read articles from Veterans and their stories are just amazing.

If you've never been to Pearl Harbor, you should.

The Allied troops in Europe were just lucky there was a moron in the reichstag that declared war on the U S of A. The Tri-Power Pack did not require him to do that. The idiot isolationists in the US would have insisted on the Pacific First and that would have really hurt lend lease.

The very sad part was because of the austerity after the first World War, Congress cut the military "to the bone" (their words), and once again let a lot of brave Americans fight with no or outdated equipment, a military smaller than some third world nations, and moral that was dismal.

"Those who forget the past...", are elected to congress, and then ask our military to do the impossible at incredible cost to themselves, while congress sits in their plush offices, getting fat on the bounty of lobbyists and other lowlifes. jmho

What I remember from Pearl Harbor history and correct me if I'm wrong, was that the attack on PH brought all of the US military (finally) into WWII. The Germans declaration of war on the US didn't come until 3 or 4 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor

I read to much.

From Wikipepedia;

"Roosevelt's speech had an immediate and long-lasting impact on American politics. Thirty-three minutes after he finished speaking, Congress declared war on Japan, with only one Representative, Jeannette Rankin, voting against the declaration. The speech was broadcast live by radio and attracted the largest audience in US radio history, with over 81 percent of American homes tuning in to hear the President.[7] The response was overwhelmingly positive, both within and outside of Congress."

The Tri-Power Pack only required the members to declare war if one of the members was attacked. Since Japan was the attacker, Germany did not have to declare war. Once Germany declared war, we followed suit. Ooh-rah

I went to Hawaii and saw the USS AZ Memorial back in 1990 a couple of months after I moved to California. that was back when the tours were given by survivors of the attack as most were only about 70 years old at the time.

Those guys were tough on the tourists, especially the Japanese ones who didn't understand the instructions about staying quiet at certain times or not taking pictures until they said it was ok. I'm sure the boat ride is full of people texting and picking boogers now- I'm not sure how they try to herd people back and forth these days.

We were in Hawaii over the millenium. Stayed most of the time on the Big Island, but had about 4 hours in Oahu before flying back, and spent them at the Pearl Harbor memorial. I couldn't get over the irony of how many Japanese tourists were there. All seemed quiet and somber.....of course none (or damn few) were alive when it went down.

Allowing your opponent to throw the first punch gets you into a fight, and justifies you beating him to a pulp in response. Of course we knew.

Roosevelt really wanted us in the fight, but he had to over come the isolationist. This would be the perfect way to do it.

Unfortunately, he underestimated the material advantage of the Japanese Military, and did not know a very damaging report had fallen into Germans hands and had been turned over to the Japanese.

As Joe Foss put it, “If it is a Wildcat versus a Zero, run, you are outnumbered. I do not even want to mention the Brewster Buffalo.

The report was a top secret report from the British Military, sent via a merchant ship that reported they were unprepared to fight a war in the Far East.

This changed the outlook of the Japanese Imperial Staff and led to the attacks on Singapore and Pearl Harbor
