I understand the local sales tax added, ours is 1%. But I do not know how property tax is calculated in that example.

Median household income via Google.

Arkansas - 49k

California - 750k

Arkansas - 195k

Average Rent

California - 1,837

Arkansas - 637

If you're a median earner, its way better to be in one of the "poor" states. The poverty level in CA for a family of 4 is right at 6 figures.

That's true, but then you have to live in Arkansas

If you’re into the outdoors Arkansas is very good. Awesome hunting, fishing, and a diamond mine

Believe or not besides Florida, which is obviously best, Arkansas and Oklahoma are the best states I’ve lived in.

I lived in Oklahoma and i've been to Arkansas many times. If Arkansas was such a great place to live in they'd have more than 3 million people living there. People in Alaska can say the same thing. Alaska has the best fishing and hunting and beautiful mountains and some of the best seafood in America yet very few people want to live there.
The best place to live in is where you want to live not where you have to live.

I think it is an aggregate number. State/local gov't collects X dollars of sales + property tax divided by Y dollars of combined income from wages/interest/distributions/capital gains. This is obviously going to vary by individual and is probably regressive.

My property taxes are maybe 3% of my income, but my sales tax burden is not the state + local rate of 7.25% of my income because not everything I buy is taxable and I don't spend all of my income.

I don't think it has anything to do with property tax. Texas has high property taxes and the county I am in is 8.25% sales tax. For the state to be only 8.6%, there can't be any property tax factored in.

True, but just think how much money you could save by not having to have anybody in your family go to the dentist ever again. That's HUGE.

The cost of living in Alaska is crazy

I will say….There is Northwest Arkansas then the rest of the state. NWA is nice the rest is a dump.

I live in Florida for a reason, I just don’t look down at some of those “poor” states. 118k is baller there
