Why I do my own work
A new client had me look at her car, just purchased off a lot "as is". 2012 Audi Q5 with 125k miles. About a week after driving it off the lot, she smelled burning oil.
She took it to a dealer who claimed that it was the camshaft cover and quoted her $9000. I didn't see the quote but I imagine it contained other services to bring up-to-date with all that mileage. I looked at it, figured it to be the PCV assembly, leaking onto the camshaft cover then onto the exhaust manifold. About $100 for OEM at Rock Auto. I replaced it today and found stripped threads for the lowest bolt holding the assembly, so I drilled and tapped to the next size up. The red circle in the picture. I also degreased the engine as best as I could. After test driving, it appears that the issue is no more. |

I found several other issues caused by the previous owner or his mechanics.
13 of 15 missing bolts, speed nuts or both for the aero cover under the engine. I gave the new owner the option of ordering a new hardware kit, or tossing the cover altogether, making it easier to change the oil. I also replaced the belt and tensioner, and found a boogered up drive for the bolt holding the idler in place. I know it's a T40 since that's what the new one (OEM part) has. Also the tensioner pulley- same T40. I tried everything to remove it with the limited access. I'll need to remove the radiator and cooling fans to get access to cut a slot in the screw head. My recommendation- get that done when the radiator is flushed. 3 of 4 broken connectors for the coils. Each connector is about $40 plus time. Instead I made it all neat and sturdy with zip ties- identifying the modification by marking with a gold sharpie. |

This one's a little mystery. The bottom end of coil 1 was dented (here it is after I repaired it with needle nose pliers). The top of plug#2 had an extra insulator on it. Good news is, non OEM plugs, so at least they were changed at least once before.

Are the people making the labels really that illiterate, or is it a purposeful play on words? If it's the latter, 3/4 of the country doesn't even know it. I wonder to this day. |

In my reply "Duck I Says" I was referring to the movie Unforgiven when Gene Hackman (Little Bill) got sick of being corrected by Saul Rubinek (W.W Beauchamp) as to the Duke of Death.
