Default SBC valve adjustment....

roller rockers L98 cam/heads......

SO, if the timing mark on the engine was in FACT indicating NUMBER SIX at being TDC and not number one.....given no oil pressure and turning engine over by hand.......and I ASSumed it was at number ONE TDC.....would the valves be screwed up by just turning it by hand...and no oil in the system??

reason I ask, I got round to adjusting the hydraulic roller lifter/rocker this AM, and when I went to do the second set of adjustments, noted that Cyl #1 was loose as a goose...totally outta adjustment....

SO watt gives???

Loose is relative.
Even if the lifters were "pumped" up, when you go to set the lash there is no pressure feeding the lifter so great care must be taken to not compress the lifter when adjusting.
Use the pushrod as a signal to tell you when zero lash is achieved.
Then do the 1/2 to 1 turn load.
I grab the pushrod and spin it, rattle it, and slowly adjust the rocker until I feel it
engage the lifter. Then do the 1/2 to 1 turn.

BUT the issue with my effed up mess here is.....does having the engine in the rong position IE 180 out on the crank/cam relationship....under dry conditions, could I have bent a valve?? or not pistons have stock valve 'relief' slots in them.....

An interference motor?
I doubt it.
Did you turn by hand or use the starter?

Does the valve in question stick or not return to installed height?

Takes some force to bend a valve.
Not knowing what you got or how you spun the motor I can't say.

You didn't get one of Stan Browns cards? It has the procedure for roller cams on it.

EO-IC

Doesn't matter where TDC is this way.

On cylinder one, turn crank. When exhaust valve is opening, adjust the intake. Crank motor some more end when intake is closing adjust the exhaust. Do this for each cylinder and you will be good to go.

The only way you'd bend a valve is if you had your timing wrong when you rebuilt the motor.

I can't turn engine by hand from front, grab by flex plate with long slipjoint pliars and yes......and so that was the goof this AM.....turned crank over 360' and the number one cyl rockers were both loose as a goose....telling me that the cam was probably out by a LOT like in the #6 firing position not #1

I suspect when my friend was under there doing the flex/converter bolts the engine got turned over 360, and so it was cyl #6 at TDC, in reality.....

Gene; take some time to find and re-read all the posts you have created so far about renewing your engine. Is it time to hire the major rebuilds out yet?
