Not impressed. Bezos' & Branson's endeavors are not much more than tourist traps.

I'd go in a heartbeat. It's the same thing the first two Mercury missions did, sub-orbital. A lot different than "The Thing" or "The World's largest ball of string".

If you're rich you can go. If it ain't weightlessness then it ain't space.

You can experience weightlessness on the "Vomit Comet" without ever leaving the Earth's atmosphere. But I think I know what you mean, that if you aren't orbiting, you really aren't "in space", and I agree with you.

Actually your not "weightless". At 17,500 mph you are actually "falling" around the earth and still have what is call micro-gravity imparted on your mass. You can never be weightless even in deep space because that micro-gravity is still there from nearby stars etc.

I don't fully agree with this. The reason why you feel "weightless" is NOT because you have escaped the Earth's gravity. In fact, quite the contrary. At that velocity, you are literally being pulled around the Earth by the Earth's gravitational field, so you are not at all in a "micro-gravity environment", it just feels that way to you.

This could lead to some weird technical discussions that other engineers have had with me over the years, basically all of whom fail to truly grasp Newtonian physics.

But again, I see what you are saying. If your space ship was in deep space, so far away from anything of significant mass as to impart a significant gravitational effect, you still have not escaped gravity altogether. The mass of you and the mass of your spaceship will be exerting gravitational forces on each other at all times.
