Default [Woodworking] Pistol Display Box

For someone here.

Oak, with walnut splines.

will have a glass top, and solid bottom covered with green felt, and small prongs to hold the pistol and one magazine.

first, i glue up the box and top, with the grain chasing around the corners, and also continuous between the top and bottom, later i'll cut the top off.

jump forward to today, got the rabbit for the glass cut and sized (lots of hand work, as the router bit was not big enough), got the holes for the magnets drilled, and got the hinge location set.

and then a coat of stain (Gunstock is the color, seemed fitting, and not so dark that the walnut splines would not be visible). let that dry overnight, more tomorrow, need to get the bottom piece fit and covered with felt, and holes located for the prongs.

then some coats of polyurethane.

Cut the end of the bullet case off that the caliber of the pistol will be and plant them in each corner rabbit. Sink 'em pretty...
Just a thought.
Looks good so far

corners line up perfectly. the 2 marks/holes you see are for the magnets later, will be epoxied in using the 2 part epoxy you see on the bench.

no pic today, but got the magnets epoxied into the top and bottom. this will keep the lid closed if it is displayed standing up.

will try to get first coat of poly on tomorrow, have another project too that will take up some floor space for a bit.

Doug: any idea what kind of handgun this is for? I’m sure he had to provide some dimensions to make sure it was large enough. I’m guessing a Colt Single Action or something similar

thankfully, i have a few examples, so i can get the little hanger prongs in just the right place so it looks centered and real cool.

this reminds me of an old football story:

some years ago, there was a partying veteran, who liked to hit town the open day after each game (normally tuesday), and he invited a rookie to come along one time. they had a great evening, hit several bars and dance clubs, and the rookie kept rough mental track of all the money the veteran spent during the night.

the next day, the rookie asked the veteran about his profligate spending for one night of fun. the veteran said, "hell son, i made $500 last night!" "what? you spent at least $1000 last night, how did you make $500?" "well, i had $1500 worth of fun, and it cost me $1000, so i figure i made $500!"

as for the direct costs of this little project? i don't know. bought some lumber, magnets, a hinge, some plastic-dip (black, all that was available), and some green felt, and glass, already had the plywood bottom material, stain, and poly.

but i enjoy the challenge of such projects, and when it is done, someone else will get to enjoy the results, so that's good news.

ahem...

i rarely show my mistakes, but i'll tell you about today's/yesterday's.

epoxied in some little magnets for the lit to stay shut. carefully check polarity to make sure i had it correct. come back today to check...and i had it backwards. sigh. yank 2 magnets out, mix more epoxy, grab 2 fresh new magnets (the ones i pulled out will be cleaned up and used another day, good thing i got a 12 pack), and epoxy them in correctly.

let dry overnight, more progress tomorrow.

sigh....

You might be onto something here. You could use magnets to make the object being displayed float in mid-air.
