I am always amazed when I see a flock of birds or school of fish do that type of thing.

Experts really don't know why birds do that; they say it could be a way they communicate, or they may just do it for fun, but likely it is for protection from predators because a predator might think there are too many of them to try to attack.

Who sat there and counted them to know that there were 10,000?

That's not very hard to do. They do it just like a lot of densely packed things are counted: Take a small square, count the birds in it, and then multiply the area. Frankly, I would've thought that there were more than 10,000 birds.

Or, one could simply count all the wings and divide by two.

Around here when you see the big flocks of starlings, if you're not in the city it's best to get some bird shot loaded and do what Joe Biden recommends, just blast in their general direction to scare them off. They are nasty.

A bunch landed in our yard a few years ago and broke the bird/cat feeders with their sheer weight and numbers.
