Though I'm a dentist by trade, I am an amateur photographer in my free time. I've sold a dozen or so pieces through an online store I have set up--I have a professional wide format printer to do all printing myself. Not sure if that technically makes me a professional, but I still consider myself an amateur. My "style" of photography pretty much necessitates the use of Photoshop, though a lot of what I do starts in the viewfinder with composition, adjusting shutter speeds and apertures, etc. My photos are not on the level of some of y'all on here, but I'd be interested to know what your opinions are--especially Yamma

G8rDMD, those are very nice! I like the B&W look and sepia in certain instances also.

Very cool shots. Some of those pics Yamma posted from her friends on FB are just begging for some "additional" Photoshopping. |

And with just the regular lens... Ummmmmm.....so.....your set up is MUCH better than mine. I just got some macro lenses that attach to my regular lens. Nothing too fancy, just something to play around with. |

Where's NNial8r when a thread really needs him.
Seriously, Yamma, I know what you are saying. It's like the old saying "Give a guy a rope and he thinks he's a cowboy". But keep in mind that while he didn't have photoshop or digital cameras, Ansel Adams altered his photos with dodging techniques in the darkroom. I would even go as far as to say that the darkroom was where his real talent came through. I'm no pro or even an expert, but I did take a photography class or two in High School. I had a good teacher who went on to have a brilliant career in photojournalism. I did a lot of sports photos for the school paper. I think there are talented photographers and talented photoshoppers. The two talents can merge to produce some fine work. |

I'll find something to post up. All my stuff is large prints mounted from back in the day. Original negs have been lost or destroyed from a variety of moves. It may take me a few to find stuff...

Found a couple that weren't too buried in storage...
I have to apologize for the quality. The first two originals are 4x5 transparencies - so focus and contrast really suck reshooting through a dslr. My background was a commercial photographer. I did location and table top for a variety of clients. One of my favorite shoots was back in 1990. I had the opportunity to shoot images for the Avon Star System Awards Catalog. I still have my copy of the catalog and all of the original transparencies of my work. The first one is a model home and was requested by the builder. Had to shoot at nighttime because the lot behind was in construction and it didn't look good through the back door. The builder wanted the curtains left in this position - which I absolutely hated because it makes a black hole. Didn't have photoshop at the time. The front of a contemporary church at the request of the pastor. These four were on mount board. Couldn't shoot straight because of reflections - although you can still see some of them. This one was for a local exotic dealership. This was the owner's personal car. Shot on location at Carillon Park in Dayton (1986ish). It was printed to 30x40 and hung in the dealership until it was bought out. Small product shot. An image I did for an old church. Also won the Award of Excellence in a local contest back in the late 80's. This image was requested from the architect firm that designed it. This building used to be for Piedmont airlines and sits on the main entrance to Dayton International Airport. Go ahead and pick them apart. I don't care... They are old images from years gone by. Although my skills may not be as sharp anymore, my eye is still sharp. Last edited by nhlgopens; 02-11-2012 at 12:56pm. |

I shoot for fun. You will never see a watermark on any of mine Those FB pics look like the people need to calibrate their monitor...way over saturated on one, bad exposures, etc...maybe they looked good on their monitor...? I can't imagine them charging someone money for them though.
F8 and be there. |

Macro and Telephoto lens are both magnifying lens, the difference is that Telephoto is optimized for Far vision while Macro is optimized for Close vision. There are "macro adapter" add-on lens that are essentially "reading glasses" for telephoto lens.
A BCF member (think it was TexAg) mentioned using a long zoom lens focused as close as it can for macro, and that's what I did with that bees pic. I've got some interesting shots doing that. |
