Default So who here hasn't stalled on the purchase of a pony for their barn?

With all the cheap ponys you can get from the SPCA, why not?

I don't much like being near anything larger than myself. Particularly horses.
How many people get broken legs, caved in skulls, or ribs every year because they were too close to one and got kicked? Besides, have you seen the size of the teeth on those things? No thanks, rather take a bullet.

A couple stories on that. One of my cousins was a horse guy, mostly cuz he was legally blind and could not drive. His second horse, a colt, liked to nip him (this was back in the '60s).

My cuz is a pretty big guy, and when the horse nipped him he would punch him in the nose. After a few of those, the horse quit nipping.

My buddy's wife has been a horse girl all her life and has several. About 8-10 years ago (she would have been about 60) she got thrown off and broke her upper arm, and not in a simple way. It never healed correctly and you can still see the crookedness.

I haven't been on a horse since I was teenager, and I can't imagine getting thrown off at 60. But back she went, still riding to this day.

But horse-women are a sub-species of Homo sapiens.

Horse women are ****ing nuts. Completely bat shit crazy. The only thing worse than a horse woman is multiple horse women together. There should be a law against them congregating. My wife has had as many as six at one time. Five registered warmbloods and a Sweepstakes Arab. Showing and competing with all of them. Dressage, Hunter Jumper, Eventing, etc... My house looks like a tack shop. Saddles everywhere. Halters, lunge whips, and riding crops everywhere.

Don't get me started about horse women.

There's She Who Must Be Obeyed with Butthead. That's his barn name - he has a fancy real name. He's an ISR registered Oldenberg.

Incidentally, ponies are mean as hell. Ponies and horses are different things. Some people think ponies are young horses. This is incorrect. I was photographing my wife at a horse event once and a lady came up to me and started chatting. She says, "I'm thinking of buying my daughter a pony." I said, "Why? Don't you like her?" She just looked confused and walked away.

Haha ^

The woman I mentioned is surrounded by other crazy horse women. She has a big quonset stable with a riding area in the middle and boards several horses. There is always several women milling around whenever I go up there, although I haven't been in the stable itself in years.

Another woman I know (friends with the above) is a professional horse massager. WTF?

A drinking buddy I had 30-some years ago was married to a crazy horse woman, and he used to tell me stories about her.

There isn't enough money or bourbon on the planet that would make me get even one horse. Different strokes.

Beautiful horse! When my youngest was a kid, he took Dressage lessons, and was a natural. Unfortunately, he POS libtard mother watched him ride once, and flipped her bi-polar switch, thus putting an end to his riding career.

If I had the millions necessary I'd love to have horses and cattle and other livestock. But I'm neither wealthy enough or young enough.

This might have been the last time I was *on* a horse, I was maybe 12. Actually it was a pony and I was riding bareback.

My "buddy" came up behind us on his bicycle, started yelling, the pony bucked and off I went onto the paved road. My first case of "road rash," but nothing more. Had that happened now I would break every (old) bone in my body.

One thing you don't realize if you've never ridden: When you're on a horse you're up pretty high. The ground is a long ways away.

My previously-mentioned blind cousin had an old riding buggy and a sleigh. Him, me, my dad, and I think my sis went up an old logging trail in the summer in the PA mountains in the buggy when I was a young teen. I also had some sleigh rides in the winter. Cool stuff at the time.

My roots, from my dad's side:

And from the other side of my family, my mom's father, who died before I was born. My mom grew up with no running water, wood heat, they grew or raised most of their food. My mom learned how to drive horses as soon as she was able -- out of necessity. But she didn't know she was poor until she left home, lol.

Horses are great just a great big loving dog that will take you where you want to go and cost the same to keep.

I believe a horse is a little more costly than a dog.

I have not owned a horse. But I can not imagine how the cost of horse ownership and all that goes with it could be anywhere parallel with dog ownership.
