Truck Spills Smelly Chicken Byproducts, Closing Road

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. — Jun 12, 2015, 10:15 AM ET

Police say a truck spilled smelly chicken parts all over an Alabama street, closing the road for hours as workers tried to clean the mess and contain the stench.

WHNT-TV reports that county emergency officials say the truck driver hit his brakes to avoid a wreck Thursday in Albertville but ended up spilling the chicken parts at an intersection.

The parts are byproducts from a chicken processing plant. Crews sprayed deodorizer and poured sand on the mess, and then put it into the truck to haul it away.

The road has since reopened.

When I first got into the food industry, I worked at a poultry processing plant turning live birds into food. The offal building was definitely smelly. We paid people 24/7 to sit in there and watch for foreign material (gloves, etc). You get used to it after a while.

Not something I ever want to get used to.

I know what my kitchen smells like when a little piece of chicken gets caught in the disposal. I can't imagine a truckload of rotting poultry parts.
