Lawmakers: Shots fired outside Capitol

The Capitol was locked down Thursday after reports that shots were fired outside one of the House office buildings.

Some lawmakers said seven or eight shots were fired, and that they seemed to be coming from the area of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Capitol Police ordered people to remain in the buildings.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was shot or wounded in the gunfire.

A spokeswoman for Capitol police confirmed that there were shots fired, but couldn’t confirm reports that officers were injured.

Pennsylvania Avenue was also cleared because of the shots, and Secret Service agents could be seen putting up barricades across the street from White House.

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said he and other lawmakers standing on a balcony outside the House chamber heard seven or eight shots.

Rep Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.) said the shots were rapid-fire, like the first part of a 21-gun salute.

In the House, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) abruptly interrupted the ongoing House session, and without explanation said the House would immediately recess subject to the call of the chair.

Wow, shots fired in DC....what.....a....shock.....I mean it's not like one of the most crime riddled areas in the country or anything.

Incident began near White House says NBC and ABC.

NBC Employee on MSNBC says DC or Capitol Police were "chasing a black vehicle up Constitution Ave."

Watching the ABC feed. If I was a D.C. area bank robber, I know what I would be doing right now. Looks like the whole D.C. police force is at the capitol.

Just think of how many speeders are getting away Scot free, right about now.

Washington Post reporting one Police Officer injured in incident. They aren't saying how.

Correction: They're reporting at least one Officer injured.

Market Watch (actually Reuters) reports a female suspect is dead.

Capitol re-opens amid reports of attempted ramming

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The U.S. Capitol was briefly locked down Thursday following gunfire and what reports said were an attempted ramming of the White House.

Both ABC and NBC reported that someone tried to ram the White House gate and was then chased, going to the Capitol. ABC is reporting that a female suspect is now dead.

The AP reported at least one police officer was injured.

Several members of Congress reported that the lockdown has been lifted.

The shooting comes as Congress was debating re-opening the federal government and avoiding hitting the debt ceiling.

No motive has been as yet reported.

According to the White House, the president was briefed on the incident and White House staff are in touch with law enforcement.

U.S. stocks SPX -0.82% were relatively unmoved by the shooting and were down for the session.
