But which union does he save?

The 7,500 members of the Teamsters Union voted for the contract while the 5,000 members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) stayed out on strike causing management to file for bankruptcy and to immediately order the closure of the bakeries. And there are also approximately 6,000 other employees who will be adversely affected.

Hope the BCTGM has a big "strike" package stored somewhere so that they can now pay all of their affected workers. One of their business representatives seems to feel that with Hostess closing someone else will buy the bakery and return everyone to work at their previous salaries. Well, it will take time for the courts to agree to the bankruptcy, competitors to make bids for the facilities (should they want to do so), and for the sale to be completed. This will probably be sometime next spring at the earliest.

And there is no guarantee that the new operator will want to hire the disaffected workers or, if it does, at the old wages.

The union objected to a one-year 8% pay cut, even though the terms offered a 3% raise for the next three years and a 1% raise in the fourth year.

A job in hand, even with a pay cut, is better than no job - unless you can get 99-weeks of unemployment.

Wanna bet that there isn't a single union job in that plant that couldn't be done by any high school kid and a week (or less) of training?
