Take the course and get the certs. It's worth money to know how to put in, splice, connect, and terminate copper and fiber data infrastructure.

We have been doing it. I have been doing it on submarines, and am NAVSEA certified already.

It’s a good idea. Before retiring, my manager asked me if I thought he should require certifications for the entire department. I said yes.

I thought I was an IT know-it-all before I took Microsoft training courses. I made some minor tweaks to some systems after my training. Best practices keeps things running more smoothly.

Its a standardization/certification program for information and comms industry.
Everything from CAT ethernet, plant design, inside outside cabling, to fiber.

So how hard do you think it would be to get your BICSI cert which is an industry standard?

This "person" is a "subject matter expert" in this area. Don't question "them".

Not sure what advice you're looking for. If you're a cable monkey, it's worth the effort to get the cert. If it's just to qualify for contracts and isn't your primary function or oversight, it's a PITA.

Navy sent me up to Norfolk for System V and cabling certs back in the early 1990s when NALCOMIS phase I was being rolled out and it really helped set me up after I got out of the service. That was back in the 10Base2, 10Base5/AUI days and I still have fond memories of covertly running coax aboard ships when our squadron deployed. Don't let ship's company catch you!

I will find out when I get the manual in a few days. Then I will get my notebook, and highlighters and start reading it..
Its never been a standard in our arena. Our company wants to venture out to more civilian jobs.
I personally have done mostly submarine jobs, and a ships.
The current work we do is per print, engineering drawings for Navy, Air Force, and Space Force. We only have to follow the print, which is their standards..

I was fortunate enough to go to some when I was working for the city govt. Top hotels, food and a good time. Ours for Software upgrades training and stuff.

I went to one once in San Antonio, A Westin by 6 flags lol, then went into see the Alamo. I think I have a pic.

This was taken just inside the main doors. See that guy by the counter looking at me? He came right over and said no pics allowed

Its not for me. Its so the company can say they have a BICSI certified person for the contract bid.
I will do it, and do my best.. Cant hurt to have another acronym associated with me on my resume'

At one of my radio sites, I'm running a 5.8 gHz high speed data link, POE powered over 525+ feet of outdoor CAT5E.

(let's see who catches that)
