I must be , because the past few weeks have been my best run ever. I'm only up .7% on the day though.

That's my individual stock portfolio. I'm sure my IRA is getting hit hard.

I've made 10% just off the oil and gold etfs. Who couldn't tell 18 months ago gold and oil were going to skyrocket?

Further...the market was down to 7500... You could have put into anything and made a return better than 5%

but what most people don't realize is you don't "lose" anything. Till you sell it that is.

Anyone who was part of the crash in 2008 has recouped almost all their losses IF they left things alone and allowed the markets to recover.

If memory serves, everything dropped when the Dow was slightly over 13,000. We are at around 12,100 now. I entered the market at a serious level when the Dow was at about 9700, so I'm up 25%. No complaints here.

Overall...and we're going back to the big crash of 1929...the stock market has consistently made money over the long haul. The wise investor doesn't sweat a 1 or 2% drop. Staying the course will pay off over time.

Oh...and the Dow really isn't the best indicator of the health of the market. The S&P 500 gives a much more accurate picture.

And you don't make anything until you sell. I love it when everyone talks about being up 20%, 30%, 40% but it's all just numbers on a computer screen.

I got out of the market just before it really crashed back in 08. Now I get into a lot of principal protected funds and buy stocks and sell them when I'm happy with the profit and reinvest only my original money always banking the profit.
