Default Peeped "The Patriot" again last night on AMC...

Great flick. And the best part? Every time they showed scenes with Joely Richardson, I immediately thought, "there's Sandy (and shit!)"

Battle of Cowpens, SC. Good flick. The final battle scene was fairly accurate as far as the tactics and the outcome went.

I'm sure it took huge stones, but Napoleonic warfare looks like plumb suicide nowadays.

The reason for that warfare was because the weapons weren't extremely accurate. So, they formed up in rows and columns and all fired their muskets & rifles on command. This threw a huge wall of lead at the other side.

Seems kinda stupid but think about warfare before that. Both sides would still line up and shoot arrows (depending on the point in history) then they'd charge into hand to hand combat.

I see Napoleonic Warfare as pretty much the same thing with a different weapon with a little more range.

Oh, things started changing into what we see today with skirmishers, sharp shooters (today's snipers), and rifled breach loading weapons. We still tend to line up in formations on a traditional battlefield, but that's going to the wayside as urban warfare becomes the norm.

Yup. Smooth bore muskets with round lead balls (and shit).

Well, even the rifled muskets with the expanding rounds that look like what we have now weren't extremely accurate.

Actually, if you look at battlefield archaelogy from our civil war, you'll see that most of the time shot was fired isntead of a single round. IT simply threw out more lead in hopes of taking out enemy formations more easily.

Don't forget Master And Commander and it's portrayal of Napoleonic naval warfare... which could be even more brutal, IMO...

Naval warfare in those days is something I wouldn't want. As the joke goes... "Bring me my brown pants."

Great respect for those sailors. As well as the aviators of WWI who took to the skies in rickety, open canopy bi-planes and hacked at each other with machine guns.

What has always amazed me about how wars were fought at this point in history, and earlier, is the free and easy military use of children. In war young boys simply became another resource to use against the enemy.

My great grandpa fought around the Marne River, Saint-Mihiel and at Flanders Fields. During WWI, he saw his first airplane and tank in person.

Mechanized infantry vs. horses. Talk about a paradigm shift.

Fully understood, but I couldn't resist a good Kony joke.
