Default Remote work ending?

Is remote work finally coming to an end? Zoom, White House call employees back to the office.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/is-remote...221055058.html

Zoom, who grew immensely during the pandemic, is asking their workers to come back to the office.

Employers seem to be working gradually to get everyone back in the office full time. They are starting with 1 or 2 days per week and will likely increase that over time.

I'm sympathetic to both sides. Some people just don't work well when remote. I've seen it with some coworkers over the last 3 years. Some work better remote (I'm one of those).

I know many here are retired or wealthy and don't have to work , but is anyone here dealing with your employer trying to get folks back in the office?

Never began with me but I wish it wasn't stopping because with all the people working at home made my commute great.

I can't do my job at home unless my company sets up a cleanroom and machines in my garage that I can fix and maintain.

Yes. And here's the kicker.

Ready?

Rumor has it the mayor of Minneapolis approached some of the larger employers in downtown Minneapolis asking them to get their people back to work to help revitalize downtown. Nevermind your downtown is dead AF because it's a crime infested shithole. All you're doing is introducing new victims.

And this was front page this morning.

How ****ing stupid can you be?

Niece works for GEICO and they are getting hauled back into the office, starting with 2 days a week. She hates it but I told her there are few things as important in advancement as eyeball-to-eyeball "face time" and interactions with the boss, colleagues and subordinates. And I was always a big MBWA (Manage By Walking Around) boss, made a point of personally interacting with my dozens of employees, individually, at least weekly - more on "hot" projects - hard to do on a Zoom tele-conference.

I know it’s getting harder to find remote jobs. It had to end sometime. Businesses don’t like paying hefty payments for empty space.

The neighbor across the street from me works at HD Corporate.
She's been remote since 2020. Only goes in once a week, for 4 hours.

HD just closed off half of their parking lots in the City of Milwaukee,
and are turning them into urban parks.
I'd guess remote working for her will continue for a bit.
Not only is it nice for them, but they also save on childcare costs.
(They have a 7 y/o).

One good thing about COVID is it proved that many folks can be very successful working from home. In my case, without that happening, I'd probably still be living in Atlanta commuting 45+ minutes each way 4 days a week instead of working from home full-time in a new house in rural south Georgia. A commute of 30 seconds is far better than 45+ minutes!

Self-employed, I've been working "remotely" for the last 30 years.

The commercial real estate industry desperately needs to fill office space. Huge vacancies.

Add that to the retail real estate market that is withering on the vine in many/most areas because of internet (old story) and also because many retailers are pulling out of liberal chithole cities due to crime and violence and vagrants/druggies/homeless.

the college I work for mandated we all come back to work full time with limited exceptions for remote work (like my 4 hour day on fridays to save fuel use) about 18 months ago. People bitched and complained, but they got over it and work actually started getting completed. the professors were the worst when it came to resisting going back to teaching in the classroom.

Lots of people simply do not like being supervised and/or held accountable. They prefer to be "working remote"...which means out shopping, running personal errands, and hanging out with friends while firing off a few meaningless emails from a mobile device to look active. Those people deserve to be unemployed.

Not ending for me anytime soon. Been out of the house since 1997, and my current employer has always allowed remote work. I "work" out of the Tampa office, however, I've never even seen it.

Even during the bullshit, I came to the office every day. My company never allowed 100% WFH and we lost a few people over it. I haven't heard if they're going to do away with work from home, but it doesn't make a difference for me.

My previous company was 100% work from home. I hated it. We had a virtual office that we'd schedule a few days ahead of time if we needed to have a meeting with a client. They'd put up signage and put your stuff on and in the desks to make it look like a permanent office. To keep the charade up, the client would have to go through security first so if they showed up unannounced, they wouldn't be let into the building because they weren't scheduled. I think it required a 2-day lead time, but it could be expedited for an additional cost (as long as the space wasn't used by someone else). There was a base cost that varied depending on the space size, plus every time you used it there was a setup/teardown and per-hour use fees.

Damn. Stopping working from home? Just as the car mechanics were getting set to do so also. We're screwed. Back in my day we didn't want staff to even have computers in their offices. They changed from managing to typing their own paperwork, and they had secretaries.

I can tell you GEICO has some sophisticated ways to make sure home workers are productive, not only quotas, but some rather exotic technology as well.
