Default Has anybody here ever lived outside the area of a train horn?

I live within a mile of the D-Troit to Chicago Amtrak train route. Day and night I hear them singing their song.

I was laying in bed one night and got to thinking that any where I've ever lived or stayed I could hear the occasional train in the middle of the night.

Is anyone here so isolated they aren't bothered with that plaintive horn?

Where I grew up, if the wind was right you might hear it out in the way far out distance.

Where I'm living now, it's just a single track within ear shot to a couple local factories and maybe once a week I'll hear the train.

Living on a barrier island, I don’t hear train horns. When we lived in Illinois we could hear them faintly

Constant background noise eventually you don't notice. Many times I think, "is my grandfather clock chiming? I don't remember hearing it chime." Then I listen, and sure enough, yes, it's chiming, I just don't notice it.

I do recall living maybe a mile or so from some tracks, and in the middle of the night you could hear train horns if you were awake.

It was even better in the steam era, from what I've observed.

Closest train track is about eight miles from my house. Don't hear a thing from them.

On the other hand, the airplanes fly within a quarter mile of us. They are low and slow getting ready to line up with the ILS for a straight in landing.

Joe's Dementia could hear the horn of that imaginary train he used to ride across the Scott Bridge. In fact, he still hears it on occasion

Constant background noise is great. I set my IPhone to play different background noise like rainfall, stream sound etc every night

I have it bad, a result of lots of rock concerts and the advent of the Walkman. Most of the time, I don't notice it. I'm noticing it now because you mentioned it.

I've never lived within the sound of a train horn, not even close.

No. Just grew up as a kid to the sound of a big box fan (we didn’t have AC) so any kind of steady sound helps me do to sleep

Only between the years 1974 to 1989. We were surrounded by golf courses and dairy farms then, since I moved to GA to follow my soon to be wife trains are a several time daily event. At least now we don't live 1/2 mile from a switching yard anymore.

We did, but after a few months, it didn't exist. I think it's like living below an airport landing path. People tell me they sleep through like nothing happened.

I live within a mile of the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner route, which is also very busy with Metrolink commuter trains and BNSF freights. However I never hear train horns because all the crossings in town are grade-separated except for one, and that one has full gating and is thus a quiet zone.
