$17k a day
So, about a month ago I had a little cardiac event (atrial fibrillation) and spent a day in the hospital. Shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, a little chest pain. It has happened a few times before, but usually everything stabilizes in a little while. This time it didn't, so we went to find out what was wrong. Took a little over twelve hours to get my heart back into rhythm.
Anyway, got the bill today. Almost $17k. This is why when someone asks me when I am going to retire, I explain not until I am eligible for insurance. Imagine if I wasn't insured. This would be a hard pill to swallow. And what if it had been more serious? A friend had heart surgery a few years back and it was almost $250k. I have about two years to go and believe me I am counting the days. |

I got in a car wreck 1-1/4 miles from the hospital, I was able to walk, no drugs administered or monitoring, just an ambulance Uber to the ER $835.
Look around the ER someday at the people in there, many non-English speakers in my area, think about how many have any insurance then ask yourself again about the high cost of care. |

Common in the city hospitals where I used to live. The minority in the area that sort of speaks English hardly have a regular doctor or health insurance, so they used the ER for a doctor. Hell like usual their not paying for it, so they do not give a shit. SOP is also bring the whole family so they tie up the waiting room and tend to be a PITA. |

I saw my bill for a week's stay in the hospital last year for some heart and GIRD issues.
I'm glad they admitted me because the VA picked picked up my deductible/co-pay from my work insurance once that happened. If I only had VA, they would have picked up the tab, but damn...just the co-pay was something like $40K IIRC. |

The ER is always chockful of illegals, those who will not pay for an insurance plan as would interrupt their take out and gaming budgets, and also for those who have olamocare but want to circumvent the co-pay. Heathcare, like income taxes, would be much less if we could collect from those who do not pay, and imprison those who break the law. |

I had triple bypass heart surgery last December. Cost me exactly ZERO dollars! Thank God for the VA or I never could have retired with the cost of insurance and hospital bills!

I had 3 major surgeries last year. As I'm with Kaiser, I don't know what the total cost was (just my monthly premium between them, Medicare and relatively minor copays) but I can only imagine it was the mid 6 digits
(my out-of-pocket was less than 2K for everything) |

My 6mm kidney stone extraction and subsequent hemorrhage cost me a little over $1000 out of pocket. My insurance covered the rest. Total bill $36,000.

Glad you're okay
Insurance & medical costs are insane! Not just for humans....A friend of mine got a puppy a few months ago. Two weeks later the dog ate her panties while she was showering & she had to rush him to the vet. Emergency surgery to remove the panties was $22k. Sorry, no pics of pantyless cutie |

I had major spinal surgery in 2016 after a neurosurgeon almost killed me during a spinal surgery in late 2015. The 17-hour surgery, along with almost 6 weeks in ICU cost well over $2 million. I didn't have to pay a penny. The results speak for themselves.

I had out-patient total shoulder replacement surgery in February. I went in at 9:00 AM, out at 2:30 PM. Total bill was just shy of $100k. IIRC Medicare and my UHC supplement payed about $35k. That doesn’t include pre / post office visits and 12 weeks of PT. My out-of-pocket was $0.
I’m VERY happy with the results. |
