Don't know who these copycats are but reading about the founder of the REAL Boston band is enlightening - Thomas Scholz an MIT engineering genius that recorded the bands first works on equipment he invented....

tom was pretty sharp, but at work for Poloroid he was on a project to make "Instant Movies" like the cameras they had. Video killed his division overnight. At first he simply modded amps to get the sound he was after. The lead guitar players gear from back then recently sold as a lot in Tampa. All modded Marshalls. Everybody freaked out because Tom had a studio in his basement, much of what he is credited for is putting this together. gen 2 is where he actually shined with his company TSD. He made a practice/ headphone amp called the Rockman that gave you the Boston sound. It worked great and creatd the whole industry for headphone amps that could be used to record direct into a board. During th period between albums when everybody forgot who Boston was, he was working on his other business instead. Then his home studio flooded and destroyed all his existing tapes for future albums...and he got back on track to put another album out.

99.9% of the time, I agree with bill_daniels. But as mediocre as Boston is, I can't even imagine a cover band. That's like copying Pizza Hut pizza. On purpose. Yech.

My take is that cover bands do not have to be good, or even average, as people buy tickets to remember the gold ol' days, even if the cover band is terrible, the concertgoers leave thinking they re-lived a bit of their history.

Here's some high school kids absolutely dominating a Head East cover:


The kid on cowbell particularly dominates, and the girl on keyboard has chops. And as a whole, look at what a great time they're having. I don't believe they're faking, they are genuinely having the time of their lives. Kudos, kids!
