Well, if there is an actual documented case of a C6-C8 being stolen this way, then I'll worry.

I'm more worried about somebody with a tow truck hauling it off. That's much quicker, simpler, and MUCH quieter than somebody starting the car.

This may be of some concern on other types of fobs, but again, I am not aware of a single case of fob "cloning" on Vettes.

Types? It has nothing to do with "types" of fobs. If you have passive entry, your fob is transmitting constantly, and it is susceptible to this kind of attack. All GM products with fobs do it. I'm now going to dig into my owner's manual on my Silverado to see if I can turn off this function on my fob as the battery on my fob is already dead in only a year. I'd rather just press the damn unlock button and disable this horseshit.

A couple of my vettes had that passive entry bullshit option. No way in hell would I use that. I always had that set to lock on my demand before I left the dealers lot! I want my car locked I lock it, no biggie. Going to Carlisle with my club for many years I never locked my cars at the fairgrounds.

Being a good contributor in the car help section of that other website for many years I noticed that most HELP I locked myself out had to do with that system!

I think that is what happened to my Z06.

My bedroom window was open. I would have heard if they started the car.

I'm afraid you are mistaken. The fob is not constantly transmitting; it sits there listening, and does not "talk" unless a button on the fob or the car is pressed.

If a button on the car is pressed, it has a very short range (within a couple of feet). If a button on the fob is pressed, it has a much longer range.

There is no way to "turn off" the passive entry on a recent MY GM.

I take it back, you don't have passive entry if the battery is dead or missing, and you have to use the key to get inside. Then you must put the fob in the slot to start. Or use a Faraday cage.

If your fob battery is dead in a year, either a button on the fob is stuck, or it was a sub-par battery out of the gate (not uncommon). I once had a battery go bad quickly, and when I changed it there was a fingerprint etched on it. Be careful to touch only the edges when changing it.

The battery should last about 3 years on average.

WRONG.

It only transmits when polled by the car

I agree. They can hook to it even in gear with the brake on, drag it around the corner, and winch it up onto the rollback in a minute making minimal noise.

I have a new 2024 Honda Pilot SE. If my FOB is dead because of the battery, I can still start the car by moving the dead FOB next to the start button which will then start the car.

I miss the gold old days of simply having a key. Not really into all this convenience. What about getting something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Stoplock-HG-1...A1GJZM3EQ&th=1

That is incorrect. I walk up to my vehicle, I press the button on the handle of the door, the doors unlock. I press NO buttons on the fob. If a thief can imitate/simulate the signal from my fob, the doors will unlock and my ignition will allow the vehicle to start. Simple.

So - you're saying that it is triggered to transmit when I press the button on my handle of my door? That's possible I guess. No buttons are pressed on my fob though.

The thief can cut the steering wheel in about 5 seconds, and slide that bad boy off.

Yes.

Myself and a couple others ( mostly eboggs) have done extensive research into how the fob system operates, with hundreds if not thousands of posts on the subject at the other place if you are interested in some long reading.

Yep, thieves have been doing that 40-50 years or so.

True but the tire squeal from a non-rotating is loud.

FYI the Z06 was reversed into the driveway with my Charger directly behind it and my stepsons F150 beside it, and there were no skids marks. It wasn't dragged.

No it isn't. Not with today's wide tires and not if dragged at walking speed.
BTDT with our old fleet vehicles. Whisper quiet.
