The Autauga County Sheriff in Alabama said that an ordained minister was arrested refusing to leave the Autauga County Probate Office on Tuesday, and not for trying to perform a same-sex marriage.

Anne Susan Diprizio, 44, of Prattville, Alabama, was trying to officiate the wedding of a same-sex couple inside the office just after the couple received their marriage license.

Same-sex couples married in some Alabama courthouses today, but many counties refused to allow the unions despite rulings on Monday from a federal judge and the U.S. Supreme Court to permit them.

As of Friday, the Autauga County Probate Office ceased all marriages inside the office. Probate Judge Al Booth told the Montgomery Advertiser newspaper that the decision to stop performing the ceremonies was related to work flow, not the recent federal court order lifting the state's ban on same-sex marriages.

Autauga County Sheriff Joe Sedinger tells ABC News that Diprizio's attempt to perform a marriage was the only reason she was arrested for disorderly conduct and not with the fact it was a same-sex marriage.

On Tuesday, Diprizio got down on her knees and refused to leave the office when asked by deputies, according to the Sheriff's department.

Courtney Cannon and Morgan Plunkett of Autauga County received a marriage license from the probate office. The couple said they planned to go to the Montgomery County Probate Office to get married and didn't know the local probate office had stopped performing marriage ceremonies, according to the Advertiser.

Cannon told the Advertiser that Diprizio offered to perform the ceremony inside the probate office for the couple of three and a half years.

"I don't even know her name, but she said she was an ordained minister and wanted to marry us," Cannon said of Diprizio, according to the Advertiser. "She was standing up for our rights to get married. Judge Booth called the deputies after he told her to leave."

Cannon, Plunkett and Diprizio could not be reached for comment by ABC News.

Sheriff Sedinger tells ABC News he and his colleagues were "just doing our duty" in arresting Diprizio.

"She was refusing to leave, so we arrested her for disorderly conduct," Sedinger said.

Diprizio's bond was set at $1,000 and she was released.

"I asked to speak with Judge Booth but he wouldn't see me," Diprizio told the Advertiser, adding that she would offer to perform marriage ceremonies again. "I wanted to let him know that I will be back. They charged my with disorderly conduct, which I disagree with, I was not disorderly, I was very respectful."

I'd believe this story if they had posted up all the non gay people who were also arrested for exchanging wedding vows at the courthouse. My guess is that number would be, roughly, zero.

They chose to stop allowing marriages to take place that particular day, and it had absolutely NOTHING to do with the court ruling? Pure coincidence? Um, whatever you may think about the issue, surely anybody knows a red herring when they see one.

I live in Prattville. I use the local Probate office all the time for DL renewal, registrations, etc. It is NOT a very big office so I'm sure these folks were disrupting the normal day-to-day business. This is why they stopped allowing people to wed there. Why they insisted on getting married in the small local Probate office is beyond me... The "minister" is the real dolt here, not the couple.

No she wasn't...she was grandstanding and the local Po Po bitch slapped her for it.

I'm a Christian conservative and I support gay rights. The problem is the word "Marriage".
I wish the gay community could call their union by another name. Then the debate probably goes away.

Plus, I don't believe the state or .gov should have any say in the matter from a covenant position.

Why is there even a marriage license? Any couple ever get a fine for doing it wrong? Anyone ever have the license revoked?

The article makes it read as if marriages were performed at the probate office, but since the gays could now, by judge's order, get in on the fun, now no one is allowed to get married there. Are you telling us that no one was ever allowed to get married there in the first place? If so, the article is poorly written, and I may revise my position.

I don't think I've ever seen nor heard of a marriage ceremony being performed inside the Probate office here in Prattville. I may be wrong, but the office in question just isn't suited for it. Who wants to get married while a bunch of rednecks are standing in line waiting to get new plates for their pickup truck or boat trailer? I checked the website for the Autauga County Probate Office and they offer marriage licenses, but nowhere do the offer marriage services. The Probate office is just that, a small office and really not suitable for this type of activity.

The video in the article below actually shows the Probate office a bit and may help clarify.

several Florida panhandle counties have stopped doing court weddings. And I agree, if they are not going to do gay marriage...they also can not do hetro marriages.

I also realize it's a ruse, saying in the papers that the court is too busy. BS. and saying they don't want to compete with wedding vendors. more BS.

The gays only want marriage so they can rub it in the face of Christians. Once it's legal in fifty states, they'll go back to shacking up like the rest of the "it's all about me" generation.
