Trying to.
At the moment I would rather chew off my arms though.

I'm just trying to take it down a notch at a time as I don't think my will is strong enough to quit cold turkey.

I'm doing the patch; 10 week program, it leaves welts on my hips and they get itchy like crazy but it is 3 weeks without one (smoke). I did my first road trip (5-6 hours) without one(smoke) and survived. I do get a little jittery but from what I'm told I don't get nasty I'm still pleasant. Just take a few deep breathes if that doesn't work I have a stash of lollipops with me in the car.

First off...you really need to have decided to quit. If you haven't made that decision in your own mind nothing will work.
I got a perscription for Zyban from my doc. It helped take the edge off.
The thing to remember is that the actual physical craving will stop after 4 to 5 days. Everything after that is in your head.

I quit cold turkey but then I quit when they told me I had to start chemotherapy for a chronic form of leukemia. Just had my fourth year follow up and am still clear of the leukemia and have not had a smoke since 7/01/2007.
good luck. You can do this if you decide this is your time

wife and I both quit, about 2.5 years ago. We both did the Chantix thing it it worked for us. We only "needed" a one month supply, each.

I quit nine years ago, I used the gum. I chose the gum because I figured it would be easy to stop that because I just don't like chewing gum. I didn't even finish one box of it.

As for how long it takes to quit, it takes the rest of you life.

Best of luck to you. Just remember you are one cigarette away from being a smoker again.

Congrats! on both being clear of leukemia and quitting smoking!
Yes, I've decided I want to quit. The patch and determination seem to be working I'm fine if I keep busy but its the habit of having one when I stop or take a break from doing something that is very hard to break for me, or like the smoke I use to have after having a meal.

I was told the first month is the hardest.

Yeah, I smoked said i was going to quit after I was done with school. And now I'm totally serious and my mind is made up. I'm a very determined person once my mind is made up on something. I don't believe being a smoker makes you a "different" person, if you are a nice person you will be a nice person regardless if you smoke or don't.

16 years ago dad got sick, cancer most likely from smoking, we don't know. Dad was on the most powerful painkillers known to man and they didn't help much. I told myself I'm not going through this and quit cold turkey, picked it up again two years later briefly and used zyban that time, worked real well. haven't smoked since but wound up with cancer anyway. What you do in your youth can come back and haunt you like the devil. Been three years this Nov, my first surgery, and am supposedly cancer free.

Heh heh. I'm the same way. Once I make up my mind to do something, it's pretty much a done deal.

I quit in 1975, 1976, ...., 1990, 1991, this time using Nicorette gum. I went to the patch to get off the gum, the lozenge to get off the patch, Marlboros to get off the lozenge, and the wretching Joneses to get off the Marlboros. With the exception of a couple of cartons, I actually quit in '91...good since I don't have to use O2 or other shit, like several of my friends.

Anyone who doesn't see nicotine as a drug like horse, didn't understand the question.

You sound serious. Good for you! You can do this.
In all truth the physical craving passes after a couple of days. The mental battle is the long haul. I wish you well. You sound like a strong person so you should be able to do this

I quit cold turkey five and half years ago. I started smoking at the ripe old age of 13, and was pushing 50 before I gave them up. I loved smoking... I half heartily tried quitting many time with no success.

You really... really ........really have to be mentally ready to quit. For me, I had a smokers cough and knew if I didn't quit they would kill me.

I quit after work on a Friday and stayed away from everyone except for my wife ( who never smoked) for the first 3 days. I also quit drinking for about 3 month.

You will be surprised how good you feel after just a few days off the the habit!!!!

Good luck with your fight. It will no be easy!!
