What were your favorite WW2 era airplanes to model?
Back in the day every one I knew was into modeling. Cars, planes, ships, rockets whatever. Airplanes were always at the top of the list.
My favorite airplane was the Vought F4U Corsair. Don't be shy to admit you admired axis affiliated planes, it was a very competitive market. Put your observations out there, I know they're many aviation enthusiasts here. |

I still build every once in awhile and follow some groups of Facebook.
The paint selections, etc...they have these days make them look so authentic. Someone posted pics of a Jap Zero the other day and got me wanting to build one. I liked them all and still do. US, Brit, Asia, Germ. Uncle flew a P38 in the PTO WW2. I also purchased and sold a large number of Wingnut Wings kits. 1/32 WW1 planes. Peter Jackson the famous director started the company. He loved WW1 and model aircraft. He made the best kits! Superb decals, instructions, box art, molds, etc...they bring about $200 per kit these days. He closed the company down after the bad dealing with his WW1 museum guy. |

B17, B25, ME262, ME109, Hawker Tempest, P40 Warhawk, P38 Lightning, P51 Mustang, Spitfire. Loved the fighters and bombers.
I hung a B17 from the ceiling in my room with fishing line and positioned a ME109 coming in on it with a P40 and P51 diving on the German plane. Heated up a little screwdriver to simulate bullet holes and used some cotton to make it look like smoke was coming out of the bomber. Built a few battleships, too. Arizona, Missouri, Massachusetts, Bismark, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau. Only one carrier, The Big E. Did a few tanks as well. Built tons of cars. Still have a couple of dozen of the best ones. |

My favorite. Started out as the "widow maker" early on in testing, but once the pilots learned how to handle the "hot rod" of bombers, it acquired an impressive record throughout the war.
My Mom worked at the Glenn L. Martin plant in Middle River, MD, just outside of Baltimore, installing gauges in the B-26. |

My Dad was ground crew on the F4U4 Corsair, everybody drools over the P-51 but these designs had an 11:1 kill ratio...

My favorite was the B-29. I had a pretty good size model that my grandpa helped me build so it holds a special place.

Corsair, P-38, P-51, P-40....just plain art. The balsa flying models I built of the Corsair (Sterling kits) were a PITA because of the gull wing. Knew a mechanic who was in the pacific in WW2 who worked on them and he said they could be a bitch to move around and take off because of the long, long nose giving little visibility.
I always admired the P-47 Thunderbolt, and finally saw one in person about 15 years ago at a local airshow. The sheer size of the thing blew me away. To me, WW2 fighters are like 1960's musclecars...loud, dangerous, fire-breathing, and kick-ass. |

B-17, P-51, F4U Corsair. Those are my favorites, but I love almost all the WWII birds.
