Default Freakin' Pics! Midyear resto blown apart

A local friend decided to restore his midyear coupe. He has a long thread going over at CF with about 1000 pics. I swiped a few of them. I've restored two of them. But, not even close to the level he is going. He stripped it down to the birdcage. Removing every panel, bonding strip, nut, bolt, etc...When restoring the frame and cage. If he spotted a hint of corrosion, dents, etc...he replaced or repaired the metal with a new piece. He even restored some pieces inside of the frame! Just incredible attention to detail. He is a one man show. All of this on his own. The birdcage is the steel structure the body panels were bonded to. The bonding strips were attached with rivets to the steel cage. Then a bonding adhesive applied to attach the fiberglass body panels. He is going 100% factory correct with all finishes, nuts and bolts, etc...

When purchased

Body lift

Bonding Seam

Floor pan

Birdcage

Bonding strip back on

Zinc paint

Frame rust damage and repair

Chassis finished

The amount of time that must take, particularly for one person, is mind boggling.
Going to be an incredible sense of accomplishment when he is done and gets in for that first drive.

Dang, that car looked pretty straight and clean before he started tearing it apart!

Why is he taking all the body panels apart? That seems like a lot of work for no reason. What's he going to use for a jig when he puts the panels back on?

Sorry for the confusion. The first pic is when he bought it back in the '80s. It has been parked for a decade or so.

A previous owner flared all the openings. They cut into the bonding strips, body line, etc...He is going for Top Flight, when finished. I think he decided on the high dollar (Semershine?) jig/press molded front clip. A lot of it will be trial/error to get the lines correct, height, etc...To say he is OCD about it is an understatement. I've never heard of anyone going to such detail. I've never seen one stripped all the way to the cage. He is also trying to salvage and refinish what he can of original pieces. He should or is starting the body part of the resto now. At first he thought it was a factory silver/silver car. I think it turned out to be silver/black.

He should have just bought one already done. Would have been a hell of a lot cheaper.

I would have found a trashed C6 and put the body of the C2 on it. I like the old ones but they suck balls to drive more than about an hour.

U need to know WTF you are doing as a mechanic/hotrodder.....

but having said THAT, every car is individual to the owner/driver.....and what makes ME comfy enough to snooze off on a long trip, is not necessarily anyone else's bag......

but nuff said, I drive hell outta my car with some improvement since you seen it.....been a while now....

just wish I had a good paint job....oh well....every man has his limitations....

so to speak.....

Guys that can do that have my utmost respect. I could tear one down, who the hell couldn't?

Most that do resto projects like this sell the car upon finishing it. They enjoy the creation process more than the finished product.

Has nothing to do with saving money or even having a nice car.

He has sentimental attachment to the car. He won't sell it when finished. I enjoyed wrenching on mine, as much as driving them. I had some friends in GA. that would drive their BB midyears to the Carlisle, PA., show every year. A three hour trip in mine was enough to do me. Similar to riding a motorcycle - not the destination, but the ride that is the fun part.

Maybe he wants to earn that Top Flight, instead of just buying one.

I know that is a difficult concept for you people, but f*ck.

People who do this wind up selling it for less than what they will have in it.

Think of it as redistribution of wealth. It'll all make perfect sense to you. You communist pig.

Probably why I've built and lived in 12 homes over the past 25 years. Once the project is done, or nearing completion, I begin contemplating the next one.

It's both a curse and a blessing !!!
