Default "I have a dream" - that you will buy a Ram truck

Ram uses MLK, Jr. sermon to sell trucks.

Dodge Ram Super Bowl ad causes MLK backlash | Daily Mail Online

really?

take one line totally out of context so you can sell trucks?

I wonder how much the heirs made from signing the release for the use of it?

The images in the ad aren't so bad, though I wonder what a man who championed nonviolent protest would think of the footage of soldiers marching in one scene. But the idea that a speech from one of history's greatest activists would be used to prop up the image of a pickup truck drew lots of backlash online. And it probably didn't promote the goodwill that the company intended.

I honestly don't even understand why companies would bother with a Super Bowl ad these days.

Chance that someone is going to be offended by your ad - 99.9%
Chances of actually gaining business - 0.01%

Can any person here name a single time that they spent a single dollar based on an ad that was run during the Super Bowl? I can't.

It's all name recognition. Procter and Gamble is running a SJW ad campaign, with a little "we are the world" like story line, then at the end, you see the Tide and other P&G logos. The sad part is, I'd like to drop them, but I like Tide, Dawn dish soap, and Ivory soap, so I probably will keep buying their products even though their commercial pisses me off.

Like everything business related, why is it so hard to just sticking with the business? "Hey, buy our shit because it's the best quality/best price/best whatever." If you want to delve into other areas, I like Subaru's approach. Most of their ads feature the charities they donate to, and of the ones that don't, they usually use some kind of feel good narrative about dogs, which would only piss off the Muslim population in favor of the 98% of America that is not Muslim. Dawn has a good animal campaign, too, cleaning the ducks. Why couldn't they just stick to that?

Take Budweiser. They have had very successful marketing campaigns. The clydesdales and old timey beer wagons? Awesome. Spuds McKenzie? More awesome, and only pissing off Muslims who don't drink anyway, so no loss of market share there. The frogs? People loved the frogs. The "wazzzzup guys?" Less cute, but still a tremendously popular ad campaign.

SJW ads? Guaranteed to piss off 1/3-1/2 of your customer base, although, like me and Tide, probably not enough to get me to stop buying the product. Never say never, though. The NFL DID lose me, permanently.
