Finders keepers....unless it's someone obvious. One of my waitresses found a 1000 dollar bill back when we had those, and I knew exactly who's it was. I suggested a finder's fee for honesty and he gave her 100$! Good night all around.

I have run in to similar situations in the past, and always remember an incident where my wallet fell out of my pocket in the locker room at work. it was Christmas time and I had my shopping money in my wallet. It was only 300 bucks, but at the the time was a fortune to me. Someone found it and returned it to me untouched. He didn't know me, but he was an honest guy and asked around who I was. I wanted to give him some dough, but he wouldn't hear of it. Wouldn't even let me buy him a coffee. Since that time, I have always tried to do the right thing and return the "whatever". It was a lesson I try to remember.

Give it to the attendant. There's no guarantee that they won't keep it, but you've made some effort to secure it.

I left a solid gold family heirloom ring in the restroom at a Subway in Connecticut last spring. By the time I realized it I was a couple hundred miles away..... I called and talked to everyone that was there and of course no one knew anything....

I would turn it in. And not just because there's probably a video camera pointed at me.

My wife left her wallet sitting on the counter of a store in the mall. She didn't realize it until she got home. We went back to the mall and the store was closed. Went to mall security and they had her wallet. They said a sales girl dropped it off and left. All her money id and credit cards was still there. I found $100 laying on the floor at John Wayne airport in Sana Anna in the early morning back in 2004. No one was around and I did sit there for a 1/2 hour. No one came looking for the money so I put it in my pocket.

A guy at work cashed his paycheck then stopped at a roadside payphone to make a call, (yes this was back in the 1900's) set his envelope of money on the ledge made the call and drove away. Yes, without the money!

Of course by the time he had realized what her had done and went back it was already gone.

You shouldn't spend it in protest of the fact that our currency has white people on it, and white people are bad. Very bad.

Walked up to an ATM once, the kind with the money tray, not the money slot most common now. $40 sitting there. Nobody around. Went into the bank, said I just found $40 in the ATM. The person looked at me as if I was crazy. I walked out $40 richer.

Back in the days when slot machines paid off in real coins, my wife found a bucket of nickels sitting next to a machine with no one around. Now you know in a Nevada casino there are surveillance cameras everywhere. There was a uniformed security guard standing nearby so we went to him and told him we found this bucket of nickels and what should we do with them. He said "Lucky you." So we played them. Can't remember if we won or lost with them, but it was about $50 worth of coins.
