Eagles don't suck.
OK, I'm not bragging because honestly I'm just a craptastic 16 handicapper.
Yesterday I played in a 4-man scramble, only 12 teams, and did OK but not in the money (we shot a 12-under 59.) I was putting really good and pretty much just putted first each time and sunk it. Afterwards the golf course was pretty empty and seven of us decided to play a 7-man captain's game. Since several of the people there actually worked at the golf course and there was nobody behind us, we all played the same hole at the same time (usually a big no-no.) On the third hole (a straight par-5 with OB right the entire hole) the best golfer among us, Justin, was captain for that hole. He starts off and hits a fantastic drive. With a little ribbing, he decides to "hog" it all for himself, meaning that he wins double if he can take all six of us on head-to-head. He murders this hole all the time, he almost always has an eagle putt it seems. I hit my drive a long way but left of the fairway - actually in the #5 fairway that runs parallel to the hole. We are playing really fast as you can imagine so it's pretty much drive up to you ball, make sure nobody is standing in your line, and hit. I hit a 5-wood from about 230 out and it looked really good but I couldn't see the green. Nobody but the guy in my cart saw the shot, and I said nothing to anybody else. Coming up the green, sure enough Justin had yet another eagle putt, about a 20-footer. Me? I'm right in front of the green about 1 yard off on the apron. I grab putter and proceed to sink it from at least 50 feet for eagle. Now Justin is pretty much sputtering and while I'm getting mobbed by the happy 5 other guys, Justin proceeds to three-putt. This is the first eagle I got where all my golf buddies saw it. Up until yesterday I have six eagles but 4 of them are on a really easy 250 yard par-4 at a little 9-hole course, and the other two were when I was playing with other people. I've only been playing for 4 years. Anyway it was just fun as hell, and I ended playing the front nine at 2 over, which is pretty good for me, and I won/or/pushed four more holes for my team. Unfortunately I had to leave and couldn't play the back 9, but that was OK as 27 holes in one day is plenty when it's 98 degrees or whatever the hell it was (hot!) |

What's best about this one is that it was done from the back tees, ball played down, no funny stuff. This year I have committed to playing the ball down always (unless instructed not to do so by tournament officials) and play all rules of golf best as possible. As a result my GHIN handicap index is real. Because of that, I play handicapped games all the time now with golfers much better than me and much worse than me and we all have a blast because it's actually fair. If you play well, for you, you'll probably be in the money - even if that means you shot an 84 or something. With my HC that would be a 68 and probably be good enough for 1st or 2nd.

Handicaps / Indexes favor the higher player. Once you get a handicap / Index down, it is a muther to raise it if you are playing bad.

I've always heard that the HC system was designed to favor the better golfers. It just gives the lesser golfers a fighting chance, but you are right - it's easier to go down than go up. However recently I went from a 14 to a 16 by posting some bad rounds though.
