Just my opinion, but horses have always been a liability. I've given away many horses I paid up to $7500 for. A very few people can make money with them, but not many. On the bright side, the owner may know this, and there might be a good horse or two in for somebody. Don't know of many people who'd want all 52 horses.

I would hate to see animals slaughtered unless I'm gonna eat them.

I was under the impression that there weren't any places in the US that still slaughtered horses. In fact I heard that you are not allowed to export horses to Canuckistan or Messico because they do slaughter horses and eat the mofos too!
A local guy had two horses that he could not afford to get rid off. He was very old and very limited income. The horses were very old and on had cancer. If he just had them euthanized he had no way of getting rid of the carcasses. It can cost several hundred dollars to get a horse put down and then buried.

Unfortunately, the stable is full.

Where is Sugarcreek? I was under the impression that all horse slaughter had been banned in the USA.

The meat is sent to Europe for human consumption. No thank you.

However, with hay prices going up every other month and no place to dump unwanted horses anymore, more and more will suffer from starvation and neglect. IMnotsoHO, horse slaughter was a necessary evil. It's very ugly, but these horses suffer a few days, tops. This is opposed to what might happen to these 52 horses if they didn't have a slaughter house to go to. Horses starving and neglected for weeks before death finally takes them is far uglier, but again, this is my opinion. The folks who pushed so valiantly for the end of slaughter would beg to differ.

I would love them to all find happy forever homes, but that's pretty unrealistic without a bunch of publicity. Even with it their chances are slim!

I wish I could help, but if you look on CraigsList for horses you will see this situation happen at least once a month.

QFT. Some are surprised that I support horse slaughter, but it seems way kinder to everybody involved.

I can't afford to feed one horse, let alone completely care for one. Maybe I will win the lottery tomorrow night.

It is a very sad situation. I wish I could save them all, just like all the other over bred animals... x 1billion

If I could I would. Just don't have anywhere to put them.

I swear if I won one of those bazillion dollar lotteries, I'd start a rescue farm.

Unfortunately, with the supply of excess animals, that wouldn't be enough money.

I'm with you, BB. Slaughter is a far more humane option than neglect, abuse, and starvation. It sounds cruel, but it's the better alternative. Of course I feel bad for the animals--it's all very sad.

I'm just glad if I ever saw a load of horses headed to slaughter, I didn't know it. Bucky's horse came off of a slaughter truck. I don't know the story, but I guess some guy saw him on the trailer and wanted him. He's one of the most amazing animals I've ever met! I would love to say he's smart, but it's more than that. He's very intuitive and I swear he's psychic! It's sad to think of all the other perfectly healthy and smart animals, not to mention the moms with babies who go to their deaths trying to protect them. Heartbreaking, but that goes for cats and dogs, too.

If I were to win the Lotto, I'd call this guy and have those horses delivered to my pasture as well.

This is old news. It was back in January of this year.

Quote:
The plea for adopters to take in 52 thoroughbred horses destined for slaughter began circulating on Facebook in January 2011. However, calls to the provided phone number now reach a recorded message that says, "Hello, this is Lynn. We'd like to thank you. The horses have all been adopted..." All of the horses in question have been relocated to new homes.

BB, I'm convinced that the "throwaways", the unwanted and unloved animals make the best "pets", whether they're horses, dogs, or cats. Give me a stray cat over a pedigree cat any day. Strays are healthier, more loving, and smarter. They are not only street smart, but genuinely smarter, too. Plus, every one I've ever had seems to realize how lucky they are to be saved. They may start out wary, but that gives way to unconditional love and devotion.

My last rescue cat, Annie, sleeps me me every night. She wants under the covers so she can get as close to me as she can, then she licks my chin and actually hugs me around my neck with her front paws. I know that you know what I mean. Their eyes and actions say it all.

If there were any practical way to do it, I'd love to have them. I only have 9 cats now. I have plenty of room, and kittys love it here. I keep them inside for a few weeks, feeding them and loving on them, then gradually introduce them to the outdoors. Cats seem to like and trust me. In 25 years I've lost only two to car accidents; the rest have had, and are having, long, happy lives. I've got one who is 16, another who is 14.

I have acquired 2 males. 1 got his shots and a clean bill of health. Both have been tormented by a larger cat. Baxter get to come inside to eat. Sometimes he sleeps inside. The other stray stays outside. Neither has been neutered.

Yes, I remember the tormenter cat. Nothing you can do about it. Are you gonna get the males neutered?
