Gonna be a plentiful berry season in my neck of the woods! Our blackberry bushes are filled with flowering berries. Our woods have wild raspberries everywhere! Now the trick is to beat the birds to the goods! I'll screen in the blackberries soon!

Wild blackberries are good here, less so than in earlier years. They tend to proliferate in recently disturbed soils, and like sun and moisture. After the 2008 crash with foundation excavations abandoned, we had several great picking spots for several years.

It looks like we'll have a ton of apples & pears this year. The cherry trees are looking good too, but the birds & squirrels always clean those out fast.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are blackberry picking with my grandparents in Pennsylvania....we would take several steel pots and fill them up at the local farm - good times.

Used to go blackberrying a lot in the local countryside with a g/f where I used to live. There were tons along a particular footpath, and nobody else seemed interested in picking them. Apart from a horse that came along, & we were chatting with its rider.
He told us the horse loved the blackberry season, and would chomp whole clumps of them, thorns and all.

I watched the bugger closely as I was holding a big plastic bowl of luscious berries, and he had his eye on them.

Used to also gather wild elderberries, and brew elderberry wine, which I always found extra special. There's something in the berries which seems to empower you, do you good, way beyond the alcohol buzz. Blackberry wine just didn't do it.

When I was a kid, we would ride our bikes about 2 miles to the park on a path which was formerly train tracks. Wild raspberries and blackberries the whole way...those were so tasty, especially after going off the path down into the woods where there were bike jumps and a couple abandoned cars. Loved those long carefree summer days!

Nope, those are blackberries for sure! I'm just amazed at the number of people I know online and IRL who think they're the same thing.

Around here, raspberries ripen in mid-July, blackberries in August.
