We may pay the smallest overall percentage of income tax since 1950 as a collective whole, perhaps, but do you realize the ones that pay 0% tax are just as well represented in that claim as the ones that pay 35%. It's a useless average stat. And beyond that, we endure consumption taxes on a daily basis that were not so prevalent in 1950. Ever buy a product at a store? You paid tax. Ever buy a "sin" product like beer? You paid even more tax. Ever put gasoline in your car? You pay a road tax. Ever purchase a used car in a private party transaction and then paid sales tax when registering it? (for a commodity that was already taxed once?) You may agree our leaders "slip those by" and continually raise those user taxes to the unsuspecting public that already pays income taxes. But to turn around and claim "taxes are the lowest ever" is simply not true. Tax on consumption exclusively? Yes, definitely. Correctly done, the Govt could sustain exclusively on that and abolish all income taxes (and the IRS) completely. You'd pay a bunch more for everything you buy, but nothing taken out of your paycheck. No tax return to file. Illegals would become taxpayers, foreign tourists would too. Also inherently encourages saving. Tax on income? It's what we've endured since 1913. Now what we currently have is a clever mix of them, BOTH income AND consumption taxes. And not surprisingly, most Americans today find themselves poorer than ever, and with all those taxes collected, the bloated Gov't STILL can't figure a way to make ends meet! This may be way too cliche, but it's so incredibly true. Government is the problem, not the solution. |

Got a graph that compares those user taxes to inflation, and/or income level? I'll bet it's wildly unproportional.
As for your link, same deal. When people earn less or no income, they pay less in income tax. Why is that tough to comprehend? Attacking their employers just might not be the correct solution to that problem. |

The Tax Foundation - A Closer Look at Popular USA Today Article Claiming Historically Low Taxes I understand being a hardcore Democrat you may not like that, but do all your other fellow Democrats a favor...Quit spreading such ridiculous nonsense, as a few of them just might be smart enough to clearly see every tax dollar that's robbed from them too, and upon discovery, will become as disgusted at the rest of us and start voting for people with some sense, not followers of tainted news headlines. |

If that's your conclusion based on all that's been stated here, wow, you do have some serious comprehension issues.
Nope, Obama is not to blame for higher taxes, But much to your dismay, rumor has it Obama is likely to (or has) convinced congress to make most of the "Bush" tax cuts permanent. (expect big headlines of this nature in the next week or so). While a positive move, definitely not a "fix" for the current situation, at least Barack made it past page 4 of his "econ 101 for dummies" handbook to begin to understand some common sense of how money flows. But I'm afraid his decision to do this is almost certainly based more on re-election possibility and/or his dream of keeping at least one congressional house on his side for the next 2 years. It's a shame (for most everyone) that it has to be this tough, but when common sense escapes you, only then does one rely on public demand to actually do the right thing. |

Since those cuts are unsustainable, and you are clearly in favor of letting them expire at the end of this year....
Please announce to everyone in the USA that earns $35k or less annually, that their income taxes are going to rise 5% for 2011. Please tell everyone that's married that you again support the tax penalty that comes with it. Two people are apparently worth less than two single exemptions. Oh, and don't forget to tell those with dependent children Uncle Sam requires them to fork over $500 more for each child next year. And while you're on a roll, tell the millions of unemployed folks that are maybe financially forced to sell an asset they held for a very long time, they too will once again be subject to Capital Gains tax. Those are ALL part of the tax cuts set to expire soon. ___________________________________________ Now, had you actually READ what I posted last night (here, I'll refresh your memory) Quote:
And whaddaya know...posted just hours ago...echoing EXACTLY what I stated last night, that you so adamantly disagreed with: washingtonpost.com So while you are so hell-bent on letting everything expire as they were "designed to do", what you failed to comprehend is that I gave Obama just enough credit to know that would never happen. |
