An update to my black walnut box thread. After three coats of oil were applied and rubbed off, I cut a plywood bottom out of 1/4" ply. I cut a piece of suede-like material out oversize and glue it to the bottom using spray glue from the crafts store. I weight it down with a couple of cutting boards I have laying around and a gallon of paint. Cut the suede to fit with a razor knife and glue it into the bottom of the box. All I have left to do is drill the holes for the hinges, install the hinges, and go over the whole thing with wax. More photos when it is completed.

While we are here, let's go over to the finishing table where I have two more boxes in process. You see, I rarely build just one box at a time. No percentage to it. If you are doing one, you might as well do three.

In the foreground, we have curly maple. Very chatoyant. The figuring appears to dance and move as your perspective changes. It still needs another coat or two of oil. In the background is some rather amazing curly cherry that I got by accident. A while back, I purchased a bunch of rough cut 4/4 cherry for a CD tower that I was building. While running them through the planer, this wildy figured board appeared. It was much too nice for the CD tower so I set it aside. I know the guy who sold it to me didn't know how figured it was or he would have put it in his "premium" pile. I tried to get some shots of it to show just how alive it is, but we're having a rather cloudy, drizzly day here. When it is finished, I will get some shots of it on a sunny day.

No, but there is a place up in Chantilly (Dunlop maybe?) that sells black walnut gun stock blanks. I was up there poking around for live edge slabs and saw them. Last two rifles that I have purchased have had plastic stocks.
