Default Help w/ Shift Knob on 2008 Automatic

I just bought my first Corvette, a 2008. Yes, with the automatic. I know.

Anyway, previous to me someone half ass installed a billet shift knob. It works but it doesn't fit right and the set screws are trashed. The original shift knob was in the car, in pieces. I put it together but can't figure out what's wrong with it. It slides into place but the button won't actuate the mechanism to actually change gears. I can buy a replacement but I don't want to spend the money to find out there is something else missing. It seems like there is a gap between the mechanism and the top of the stem. There's a plastic insert in the stem that looks like it may be broken. So, not 100% sure just a new knob will fix the issue. I'm probably overlooking something simple. Any one have any ideas?
