Hands down, the correct answer.

If you enjoy shooting it, you practice with it. If you practice with it, you'll get good with it. If you get good with it, you can trust it to protect if the need arises.

I have a couple of 1911's that I love (one fullsize and one carry size). I love shooting them both, and carry them in the winter.

I have a S&W Shield in 9mm (performance center version). Nice and slim and carries well. This is what I carry when I am backpacking or outdoors.

I also have a Sig P238 in .380 that is my 'light carry' when I'm riding my bike, or out and about and just don't want to carry the Shield. It's like a baby 1911 and I'm very comfortable with that style of firearm.

But you need to try a multitude of firearms. It's fun AND you get educated about what you feel comfortable shooting and shooting WELL! You may prefer a Glock or a H&K or a Ruger or a Springfield XD (or XDm or XDs) or a Walther. So many choices.

This is the fun part!!!!
