It probably came from a collision between two planets the size of Mars or larger, very early on in the history of the solar system. It was the core of one of those planets, or part of it anyway. Probably billions of tons of transuranics (radioactives), and precious heavy metals like gold and platinum.

Prediction: At some point in the near-ish future, our space yards will be located near the resting place of this asteroid once they move it closer to the sun and in a stable solar orbit, possibly at one of our Lagrange points. We could build a truly impressive fleet of ships, or the hulls anyway, from just a fraction of the easily-extracted metals in this thing.
