That was always the stigma. Ironically it's the opposite. The cleaner your hair the more likely they will settle there. Colored hair is difficult for them as well.
I can't remember my brothers or myself ever having them as kids.
My daughter got them once about eight or nine years old from a kid on her softball team. After that we made sure her and my son had their own batting helmets. Same for the grandkids now. Little girls are more likely to get them because they share hair brushes and accessories.
