Companies are not forced to do anything. They enter into agreements with the unions.

I might also add that even if you are not a member of a union, if you are in an industry that has a union your employer will often times offer comparable union wages and benefits just to keep the union out.

Unions built the American middle class and were at their strongest when America was its strongest. That's undeniable.
