As I try in vain to explain to my broke girlfriend, it isn't minuscule and it isn't a bargain if you don't have the money to spend. Oh, she can get 50% off of some shoes, it's the bargain of the century, she practically can't afford NOT to get the shoes, blah, blah, blah.
Well, when those shoes go on the credit card she can't pay for, then that's it. She's paying interest on those shoes for the rest of her life. Not quite the bargain she thought. Foreign aid is like those shoes. We are still paying interest on the very first dollar of foreign aid we ever gave out, and it's interest only. If we were paying principal payments on our national debt, then it would be going down, not up.
