We lost two nuke subs early on in the program. Soviets have lost five that we know of, including one in August 2000. I've never been on or near a Soviet nuke sub, but have heard that crew safety isn't very high on their priority list and that the radiation levels inside can be dangerously high compared to U.S. nuke subs.
