Part of the reason most of the top drivers have co-drivers. Same goes for race tires. Sacrificial lamb takes the first lap to put heat into both. The improvement in handling is notable due to the weight savings. Same reason these top drivers are spending huge bucks on extremely light weight rims. I'm expecting to see more drivers with carbon fiber wheels very soon.
