Yours has a ratchet stop on the end of the thimble. That can be used for consistent spindle pressure for accurate measurements.

To clean between the anvil and spindle, a plain piece of paper works just fine. Place the paper there and gently (lightly) pinch the paper and then slide it out. Check zero.
