Some folks hold on to old school values pretty hard. They honestly believe that there is something wrong with gays for making that lifestyle "choice". (as if they themselves chose to be straight). My mother never really could accept that one of my cousins is gay, and she loved him dearly to the day she died.
And sometimes people just need to feel superior to someone else to compensate for their own feelings of inadequacy.
Who knows.
