I don't disagree....Why the piston "came apart" is the question.....There has to be metal chips in the pan. I might pull it off.
Just got off the phone with the best guy in my area, according to many. I used this shop many years ago with great success, (rebuilt a 72 vette 350 cu in). His price is firm at 4k....For a complete job, crank to heads installed. I was hoping to get that number down by tearing it down, but no. And, it's going to be tied up for 2 months....I looked at some replacements long blocks and by the time you get done it's close to 4k anyway. I guess if this motor and head are deemed unusable I'll change gears back to the 390.
