Don't rank on Scoobydoos! Her Forester returns 30mpg on the road, will swallow unbelievable amounts of stuff and even has seat heaters. Coming up on 40k so far and it has cost exactly ZERO dollars in maintenance so far... the dealership still owes us 1 complementary oil change. Nicest feature is the ease of ingress/egress as the front door openings are huge and the rear wheel arches extend only minimally into the opening. No, it's not sexy and it is not fast but the damned thing is a pretty perfect DD.
That said, if you want SPACE I recommend a short wheelbase F150 with the Coyote V8. You choose the cab design... keep the options in check and drive happy for less than your preferred total.
