Chuck, to further clarify, if buying a used iPad I would not go below the 5th generation. I'm currently using a 5th gen iPad Air, which is about 2.5 years old, and it's fine. Still getting updates from Apple, plenty fast, etc. My wife has a 4th gen (I think) iPad Mini and it hasn't got updates in quite awhile, it doesn't have fast charge capability (that's what the USB 3.0 capability does for you with the 5th gen and up), and it's nearly becoming unusable due to being so slow. So if you are looking on used device sites, make sure it has a screen shot of the General - About screen so you can see what the Model Name is.

Edit: Mine might be just 1.5 years old, I'd need to find the paperwork on it to see when I actually bought it, but I'm pretty sure it had been around for at least a year or so by the time I got it.
