In the book, America's Reluctant Prince: The Life of John F. Kennedy Jr., by Steven M. Gillon , an ex secret service agent told the author that during the Cuban Missile Crisis the nation was at Def Con 2 and on the brink of nuclear war.
The agent told Mrs. JFK that if the need arises he will take her and her children to the bunker under the White House. She told him, NO. Her reply was if things get that bad she planned to take her kids to the lawn of the White House and share the same fate as millions of other Americans.
Ditto for Attorney General RFK at the same time. He was told to move his wife and eleven children since they would be in the blast zone if Washington was bombed. He refused to do it.
Glad I was born before 1950, when we had standards. God, Country Family in that order.
